of an on-line community of more than 120 million communications-enabled vehicles and users on the roadway at the same time,
all connected to the internet in a rolling MESH network. Such a network would create unprecedented opportunities for convenience,
safety, entertainment, information, advertising, service delivery, emergency communications, and research. Telematics, the remote communication between systems and devices, has evolved to refer to an emerging market for communications, entertainment and information services delivered to moving motor vehicles via wireless technology. The development of an integrated solution offering will enable an Advanced Traveler Information System to provision a suite of new InfoTainment services to vehicles/consumers anywhere on the roadway moving at mainline speeds vs. a stationary vehicle on the roadside as in the current motor club or independent service center model. This defines and changes the whole paradigm and ushers in a new ‘upscale vehicle service concierge’ that has the capability to be in “constant contact” and one that leverages a “connected vehicle” and a connected community of vehicles, service centers and drivers anytime … anywhere ... the "Smart-Traveler Vision". The Cloud Computing Platform - VISION is built on the Google App Engine
Cloud platform. The platform is highly distributed and runs across multiple data centers. The platform has at its core, a
common underlying cloud based infrastructure that is highly redundant and massively scalable. The platform provides a suite
of native applications (the VISION Core Features) and extensibility points (Gadgets,
AppEngine and GData APIs) that runs on this common infrastructure.
The different extensibility points provide varying degrees of flexilibity and integration into the platform. The diagram below
describes the high level logical architecture of the Google Apps platform.  The Google Apps Platform Google App Engine - Google App Engine enables you to develop full scale web applications that are hosted on the Google cloud infrastructure. App Engine provides the deepest level of integration into the Google infrastructure and thus, has the greatest level of flexibility.  Google App Engine handles your application's infrastructure and removes many of the typical development, deployment and operational challenges involved in building web scale applications. Google handles deploying your applications code to a cluster, application monitoring, failover, and launches application instances as necessary. The Google App Engine solution stack provides a prescriptive programming model to ensure that applications built on App Engine are scalable; the most notable being the non relational datastore. App Engine currently includes Python and Java runtimes and supports many of the frameworks targeted at these runtimes.  Google Gadgets - Google Gadgets are lightweight applications that are written in HTML, with JavaScript, Flash or Silverlight for dynamic behaviors and can be embedded on any page on the web. Gadgets provide the foundation for dynamic content within Google Sites, GMail and Calendar, whose interfaces act as gadget containers and provide a degree of context for the gadget. Google Gadgets are developed using the core gadget api and the numerous gadget API extensions available (OpenSocial, Maps, Google Finance, Ads, Google Calendar, Google Spreadsheets). By leveraging the OpenSocial API extension in your gadgets, you can create gadgets that have social network features. Google Apps APIs - The Google Apps APIs programmatically exposes data from the core applications. They build upon the Google Data API which is a a simple standard protocol for reading and writing data on the web using the xml based Atom and RSS standards. The Google Apps APIs are split into two categories, Management APIs and Application APIs. The Management APIs enable user account provisioning, single sign on, data migration and usage analytics. The Application APIs enable interaction with users' calendar, contact, document and spreadsheet data. The combination of the massively scalable cloud infrastructure alongside the core applications and extensibility points means that the Google Apps platform is a powerful accelerator for the development of a high volume portal with social networking functionality.
